- Long Distance Buses
There are a number of long distance buses including Translux, Intercape, Greyhound and the Baz Bus (which is the only real backpacker bus).

Southern Africa does not have a great railroad infrastructure so travelling by train is fairly restrictive (but fun nonetheless).

Without doubt, the cheapest way to travel is to use local black transport systems or “minibus taxis”. They require nerves of steel but are definitely the most efficient way to get around pretty much anywhere in South Africa.

Reputable companies will make an authorisation on your credit card to check that you can pay the amount, but won't take the money out of your card. If you pay cash to a small car hire company there's an outside chance that your cash will remain in their bank account and never find its way back to you. People who do this kind of dodgy business know that you are leaving the country and won't be able to come knocking on the door to get your money back, so pleez be careful. If you do use your credit card you can't query the payment after one month has passed, so be sure to check that the money was not taken out of your account.
