Masiphumele Township Tours
“Please come and experience what life is like for my brothers and sisters in the township and I will describe to you what has changed in recent years since democracy.” Since 1996 Charlotte (Nomthunzie), a local Resident of Masihumelele, has been guiding, entertaining and educating visitors to Masiphumelele. You will walk together to meet local families, visit shops, a hairdresser and other businesses, nurseries, schools, churches*, projects and the superb library. You will experience at first hand how people live under often difficult circumstances and you will see some of the work being done to restore dignity to a previously disadvantaged community. Let Charlotte know if you think you would like to eat a meal here, or visit a ‘sangoma’. Upon request, she can sometimes arrange for traditional musicians and dancers to entertain whilst you eat hearty African food prepared by Zukie. On *Sundays she runs a ‘Gospel tour’ where you will hear beautiful South African township spiritual music. “Masiphumelele” means “we will succeed” You can stop for some lunch or tea or visit a shebeen for something stronger if you like!
