South Africa's best backpackers
Buccaneers backpackers is one of the best backpackers in South Africa and a legend in its own time, thanks to the hard work and generosity of the Price family. Set in wild coastal forest, this ‘backpackers village’ has exceptional sea and lagoon views and a stunning beach on its doorstep.
Strokes of creative genius are apparent everywhere - from their airy dorms with sea views to their wide choice of doubles - safari tents with beds, cosy rooms in secluded cottages and gorgeous en suites with private sundecks and a terrific bush camping ground.
The backpacker pub provides legendary revelries and gob-smacking nosh. Every day there’s a fun, free activity like a river booze cruise, volleyball or beach sundowners - always with free wine.
Also free is sploshing in the tropical pool, canoeing up the river, boogie boarding or taking a quiet beach walk.

Mainliner bus services
These are usually air-conditioned “luxury buses” which have on-board toilets and a hostess who occasionally offers you a sugary drink or blanket. “Chicken (pack ‘em and stack ‘em) busses” are cheaper, less spacious, more crowded, more likely to be fun (if you have a sense of humour) and more likely to break down. In some areas they may be the only bus service and are unlikely to have a strict timetable.
