This Cape Town based car hire company has reliable and affordable car hire for both local and national use. They pick up and drop off anywhere in the country. Their share call number is 0860 447 3222. The best car hire rates in Botswana The following are your easiest options. Local rikkis: These small, cheap, Asian-style “shared taxis” buzz all over the place. They’ll pick you up wherever you are and drop you off anywhere. Along the way other people will be doing the same thing so it’s not always direct, but it’s often fun. Local buses: They’re cheap but don’t run all that frequently and often take a long time to get anywhere. Taxis: They’re an expensive, but easy way to travel. Minibus taxis: They occasionally require nerves of steel but are probably the cheapest and most efficient way to get around pretty much anywhere in South Africa. Young and old, fat and thin are crammed into a minibus with varying volumes of noise and a variety of languages. They’re cheap, convenient, drop you off where you want and are NEVER full (even if you might not agree). Ask a local for the appropriate hand signals/sign language. Long distance taxis: Many white South Africans will tell you that you’re mad ’cos these taxis are renowned for accidents thanks to their flagrant disregard for road rules. Some travellers use them throughout their trip though and in some areas they are your only choice. Statistics are probably on your side, and you’ll get to meet interesting locals. Long distance buses: Long distance bus services include Translux, Intercape (who offer backpacker discounts), Greyhound and the Baz Bus (which is the only real backpacker bus). Ask your hostel for more details. Trains: They can be fairly restrictive but are always a great way to travel. Often fully booked in school holidays, so plan ahead if that’s when you need to travel. Buy your own car: Check hostel notice boards, classifieds and free ad papers for cheapies. Car hire: Use a reputable company that provides backup, and check the contract conditions before you sign up. Hitch: Not the safest option but certainly the cheapest. Puh-leeze be careful. Walk: Always the healthiest and most natural way to travel. But not always safe - so please use common sense, especially at night and when walking alone. Planes: Booking ahead will get you cheaper rates.
