A backpacking hostel in the Wild Coast

Amapondo Backpackers is run by people born and bred in the area so they bubble over with info, history and suggestions for Pondo-licious things to do.

Nosi and Thandi are the welcoming committee, while the rest of the crew go all out to make your stay memorable. Set your own agenda with hammock time, beer time, swims, free walks with Bongs, sharing travel yarns or catching up on a good book.

Hikes around Port St John's abound with waterfalls, the Gap, the Blowhole, Third Beach, the airstrip and villages galore all waiting to feel your footsteps. They say that once you’ve been here, you’ll find loads of reasons to postpone leaving. Or convincing reasons to return. So watch out for Pondo fever.

It’s not an urban legend. It’s rural reality. People do stay longer. Some become locals. Perhaps because they’ve forgotten where they were going...

They have just made some awesome self contained houses which are  calld the Crystal houses. The bar has been extended and sees live music, table tennis and Texas poker nights on Wednesdays. Their restaurant delishes up Mussels Diablo, beef burgers, field mushrooms and a seriously good vegetable stirfry. Fresh bronze bream and octopus are regularly available, as is crayfish in season. Yum.
