Stutterheim

Close to the Amatola Mountains and off the beaten track, this town offers yet another opportunity to discover South African via the back roads.

On the N6 between Jo'burg and East London, this little town lies at the foot of the Xolora Mountains which form part of the Amatola Range. The original settlement was at Dohne's Post where the mission was built, but when men from the disbanded British German Legion settled nearby the town's name was changed to Stutterheim in honour of their commander. The area abounds with scenic drives through the mountains.
