Soweto

A name synonomous with mines and Apartheid

Soweto

Its name alone is symbolic of the fight against oppression. Made up by a collection of townships, each with its own unique character, Soweto is a creature born of mines and apartheid. It became a leading force for change during the apartheid years. Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu lived in Vilakazi Street, Walter Suisulu (an ANC founder) lived nearby and The Freedom Charter was created and launched here.
The Regina Mundi Church was a haven and inspiration to many - not to mention the scene of the 1976 student uprising.
