Potchefstroom A student town and home to the Aardklop festival. Founded in 1838 by the Voortrekkers, Potch was the first capital of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek (ZAR) and was part of the Republic of Winburg-Potchefstroom. The first shots of the first Boer war were fired here and the town housed a concentration camp during the second Boer War. The annual Aardklop Festival with its arts, crafts, music and theatre performances draws crowds of up to 50 000 people every year. The rest of the time the student population keeps the town rocking. Things to see and do include visiting the bird sanctuary, the animal park and the site of a massive meteorite impact, which created an incredibly rich gold reef. There’s plenty of activity to keep your heart pumping - hike, river raft, canoe, mountain climb, abseil, mountain bike and fly fish. What to do
