Port St Johns

Once a busy trading port, Port St Johns nestles on the banks of the Umzimvubu River. Many people arrive planning on spending just a few days, and end up leaving months later. It's called Pondo Fever and it's a pleasure.

"Pondo Fever" is catching

The bustling coastal village of Port St Johns lies below some dramatic cliffs called the Gates. A vibey African atmosphere permeates its two-street town centre with its interesting mix of crumbling colonial and African buildings which hold a variety of general dealers, banks (you can change traveller’s cheques) fruit stalls and hawkers who sell veggies, chickens, sheep and clothing...
You can swim at Second Beach, 5 km out of town.

The largest coastal town on the Wild Coast, Port St Johns lies at the mouth of the Mzimvubu River. Mount Thesiger guards the east bank, and Mount Sullivan the west.
Many people arrive planning on spending just a few days, and end up leaving months later. It’s called Pondo Fever and it’s sometimes incurable.

Beware the Jaberwock...
"Pondo Fever" makes it easy to forget what day of the week it is. A bad case can even make you forget to go home.
