Pietermaritzburg

The area makes a great base for exploring the Drakensberg and heading off into Leostho. There is heaps to do in the nearby vicinity with mountains, rivers and more offering themselves up for fun activities.

A beautiful city with much to offer

Named by the Boers in recognition of two leaders - Piet Retief and Gert Maritz – who fought in the battle against the Zulus, and just 80km from Durban, this is the capital city of KwaZulu Natal.
It makes a great base for exploring Lesotho, the Drakensberg and the Battlefields.
Alan Paton (author of Cry the Beloved Country) was born here and Ghandi formulated much of his thinking from experiences he had in the town.

Lots to do here

The city, famous for its beautiful gardens and shady tree-lined streets, boasts a rich history and lovely old colonial architecture.
There are loads of adventure activities on offer with world class mountain bike routes and brilliant white water rafting year round - hey, the famous three day Duzi Canoe Marathon to Durban even starts here.

Home to world class mountain biking trails, Maritzburg has become an adventure destination of note. The Umkomaas River offers Grade 3 white water rafting, while the Dusi canoe marathon draws 1 500 paddlers and 3 000 spectators. Abseil the Howick Falls or the cliffs of the Umkomaas Valley, fly above the ground on a canopy tour, microlight, parachute or paraglider and head deep into the mountains to test your rock climbing skills.
