MkuzeKZN

This is probably the best base you could choose for exploring Maputaland, and area rich in unexploited wilderness where local people still live according to generations of traditon.

The gateway to Maputaland, Mkuze is close to 4 game reserves, 11 protected wilderness areas, and a World heritage site. In the nearby Mkuzi Game Reserve there is an amazing variety of birds and animals and a rare forest of giant fig trees that offers a unique walking experience. The path goes through umbrella thorns and ilala palms, over a swing bridge and into the hush of 25-metre high fig forest. More than 380 bird species have been recorded at Mkuzi, including fish eagles, kingfishers and a host of ducks and waders. The bird watching hide at Nsumo Pan is a highlight of the reserve. On game-viewing drives and guided walks through a wide variety of habitats, you may see rhino, giraffe, zebra, kudu and impala.

Mainliner bus services
These are usually air-conditioned “luxury buses” which have on-board toilets and a hostess who occasionally offers you a sugary drink or blanket. “Chicken (pack ‘em and stack ‘em) busses” are cheaper, less spacious, more crowded, more likely to be fun (if you have a sense of humour) and more likely to break down. In some areas they may be the only bus service and are unlikely to have a strict timetable.
