Messina is the most northern bushveld town in South Africa. It's located approximately 12km from the busy Beit Bridge border post which leads to Zimbabwe. (An estimated 130 000 vehicles and a 1000 000 pedestrians pass through this border post annually.) Messina is situated in the Limpopo Valley, with Tshipise - a warm water mineral spring - nearby. If you want to experience the wonders of the spring, try the worthwhile Aventura Resort. The dry bushveld town lies 540m above sea level with an excellent climate for the cultivation of citrus, mangoes and tomatoes. The population of greater Messina is calculated at approximately 26 000 people as the Langeberg food canning factory is situated in Messina. It is at this plant that tomatoes are processed for All Gold, South Africa's most loved tomato sauce.

Messina was founded as a copper mining town in 1904. In 1990 the De Beers Consolidated Group opened a new diamond mine nearby which has brought new life to the area.
